Sony’s MCX-500 8-Input 4-Video Channel Global Production Streaming/Recording Switcher is much more than just a portable 8-input switcher. It is a global system that supports both 60 and 50 Hz production formats, so you can work with it virtually anywhere in the world. Four 3G-SDI inputs, two HDMI, and two composite (CVBS) inputs each feature a discrete frame synchronizer, allowing you to mix input sources. The unit internally processes the input footage at 1080i.
The MCX-500 combines a manual control surface with a touchscreen LCD that you can control locally or from a networked device. As you would expect from a professional mixer, cut, mix, wipe, and key effects are built into the unit. In addition to the program and multiview preview outputs, the switcher can also live stream to services such as Ustream via Ethernet, without requiring additional hardware. Likewise, the MCX-500 can record the program stream to an SD card, not included, via the built-in SD card slot. Beyond just the video switching capabilities, it is also a 5-channel audio mixer. You can control the switcher remotely via Mac, PC, or a tablet.
The Sony PDW-F1600 is an XDCAM HD422 recorder and player. Built upon blue laser technology, the XDCAM HD line of products takes advantage of non-linear workflow, while keeping the same archiving infrastructure professionals are accustomed to with tape-based formats. The player is ideal for transferring footage into non-linear workstations.
Sony’s PMW-PZ1 4K SxS Memory Player makes playing back 4K footage as easy as inserting your SxS card and pressing play. It features a single SxS card slot, HDMI output, 4 x 3G/HD-SDI outputs, analog audio output, and a 3.5-inch LCD. This combination enables the seamless playback, copying, and monitoring of 4K and HD video across a diverse range of applications not only for video production but also for development of 4K equipment and 4K video walls at events, exhibitions, museums, and other venues.
Compact and powerful, the Video Devices PIX-E7 7″ 4K Recording Video Monitor can record 4K video over HDMI and 6G-SDI to SpeedDrive SSDs. Not only is the PIX-E7 a powerful recorder, it also has a built-in 7″ 1920 x 1200 resolution touchscreen for monitoring framing, checking focus, and displaying scopes. Video Devices designed the PIX-E series of recorders to be compact so you can use them with small cameras and camcorders without weighing them down excessively.
Firmware update v3.00 also adds the capability to simultaneously record an edit-ready 4K ProRes file (MOV) to the SpeedDrive and 1080p H.264 file (MP4) to an SD card. This is useful for dailies and other applications. If you have a LUT active during simultaneous recording, it will be baked into the H.264 file only and will not affect the ProRes recording. This allows you to record a ProRes master file for editing and Rec.709 H.264 file for client viewing. 4K to 1080p downscaling happens automatically during simultaneous 4K/1080p recording. The update also enables H.264 recording with a timecode stamp to the SpeedDrive and/or SD card.
As a subsidiary of Sound Devices, Video Devices implemented a few pro-audio features as well. Aside from being able to record audio from the digital video connections, the PIX-E7 has analog audio inputs in the form of 3.5mm jacks. To expand the pro-audio capabilities of the PIX-E7, a separately available XLR audio mixer with meters can screw into the bottom 1/4″-20 tapped hole.
